How to Rate the Same Joint Multiple Times

Under the guidelines established by of 38 CFR 4.25 (b), all disabilities arising from a single entity or diseases may be assigned separate ratings, except as otherwise provided.  This allows a veteran or service member to pursue multiple ratings for hip and knee injuries under the applicable rating codes.   For example, there are three possible rating codes for limitation of motion of the hip and thigh under VA Codes 5251, 52552 and 5253.  It is possible for you to receive disability ratings under one, two or all three rating codes- depending upon the facts of your case.  While shoulder injuries are specifically excluded from this provision, you will find that it is possible to rate many joint injuries through multiple rating codes.   Thus, review your medical records and range of motion assessments carefully, as you may find that this opportunity is available to you as well.
