How to Help Gold Star Spouses Receive DOD & VA Survivor Benefits

Under current federal law, Gold Star spouses are prevented from receiving survivor’s benefits concurrently from the DOD and the VA even though they would normally qualify for both.  For now,  surviving wives and husbands of fallen soldiers must choose between one of these benefits or pass one on to their children.  While two bills introduced this year- the Military Widows Tax Elimination Act of 2019 (Senate) and the Military Surviving Spouses Equity Act (House)- would address this injustice, both bills are stalled in committee as of today.  Please write to your Senators and Congressmen via the senate.gov and house.gov websites to urge them to support these measures and keep America’s promise to our fallen soldiers.
